KTM Teases New Automatic Transmission With AMT Prototype
Official details to be revealed Sept. 24
KTM debuted a new prototype with an automatic transmission at last weekend’s Red Bull Erzbergrodeo. KTM calls the prototype the AMT, but we suspect it will eventually become a new 1390 Super Adventure.
The teasers show two-time World Enduro Champion Johnny Aubert tackling the Iron Road Prologue on the AMT Prototype, demonstrating its off-road capability with carefully selected shots of the lever-less left grip. A link in the description takes us to a page on KTM’s site with the tagline “New technology is on the way for KTM enthusiasts to enjoy,” and a timer counting down to Sept. 24.
Based on the size of the machine and what we can see of the engine, we assume the AMT will form the basis of the 2025 1390 Super Adventure, giving KTM an answer to BMW’s R 1300 GS and R 1300 GS Adventure which we also expect to be offered with an optional automatic transmission.
The prototype appears to have a shift lever by the left foot. A quick shot of the left handlebar shows the lack of a clutch lever, but also a switch in front of the grip marked “DOWN”, suggesting some form of paddle shifter as well. A later shot from Aubert’s perspective shows him pressing another button with his left thumb below the grip, which could be an upshift paddle.
There’s a long way between now and Sept. 24, so we expect KTM will slowly drip out more teasers in the months ahead.
